Market Overview
Private Medical Insurance in Singapore
Singapore has the most sophisticated and mature insurance market in Southeast Asia. Regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the market is highly competitive, transparent, and open, with both onshore-licensed insurers and offshore IPMI providers freely accessible. Singapore serves as the regional headquarters for many international insurers operating across Asia.
Group medical insurance is a standard and expected employee benefit in Singapore. The city-state's high healthcare costs, even in the public system, make comprehensive medical cover a key component of any competitive compensation package. Many employers also supplement mandatory CPF contributions with private group health plans.
Singapore is one of the most permissive markets in the region for offshore insurance. Businesses and individuals are generally free to purchase IPMI plans from international providers, provided the insurer is not actively soliciting business in Singapore without appropriate MAS licensing. This openness makes Singapore an ideal market for premium international health plans.
Offshore Permitted
Both Singapore residents and foreign nationals may purchase offshore insurance. Singapore is broadly permissive.
