International Schools — Plan Guide

School Medical Insurance: What to Offer and Why

A practical breakdown of what international schools across Asia typically offer — and where the real value lies within each benefit category.

The following information is a general outlook on international school medical insurance based on Vennsure's experience across South East Asia. Each school typically has its own bespoke plan which can vary significantly. This is provided for general understanding only — Vennsure recommends a bespoke review for every school.

~USD $2,000+ Per Head

Benefit

Area of Cover

Typical: WWE (Worldwide Excluding US)

WWE is the most popular coverage even for higher-budget schools. US coverage typically adds +40% to +100% to plan premium and is rarely worthwhile. Vennsure always recommends WWE over Asia-only.

Vennsure View

Don't limit to Asia-only. The saving is rarely worth the psychological trade-off with teaching staff.

Benefit

Deductibles & Copays

Typical: $0 – $25 / 20%

100% coverage with no deductibles delivers the highest teacher satisfaction of any benefit. However, as schools face lower enrolment and rising costs, many are moving away from full cover. Full coverage now accounts for roughly 20% of higher-budget schools.

Vennsure View

Per-visit deductibles are the most effective tool for controlling premium creep driven by high-frequency, low-urgency claims.

Benefit

Inpatient Limit

Typical: USD $1m – $3m+

There is little practical point in insuring above $1m — the risk of exceeding this in a single year is extremely low, and insurers know it. Rate increases above $1m are modest, but the psychological impact on staff is positive. This is one area where schools can increase perceived package value with minimal budget impact.

Vennsure View

Push to $1m minimum. The jump above $1m costs relatively little and reads very well to prospective teachers.

Benefit

Outpatient

Typical: USD $5,000 – Unlimited

About half of higher-budget schools in Asia cap at ~$5,000; the other half go unlimited. The premium increase for unlimited is moderate, as is the additional satisfaction impact. Note that rate variation between insurers for the unlimited jump is significant — worth testing the market.

Vennsure View

The gap between $5,000 and unlimited is priced very differently by different insurers. We benchmark this specifically.

Benefit

Dental

Typical: USD $500 – $1,500

Dental is high-use and therefore high-premium. Adding $1,000 in dental coverage typically costs around +$450 per person in premium. Cost-benefit improves at higher coverage levels. Some schools have moved dental in-house with reasonable success.

Vennsure View

Dental is a visible, appreciated benefit. For tighter budgets, redirect this spend to inpatient or outpatient instead.

Benefit

Maternity

Typical: USD $10,000+

Maternity becomes more cost-effective at scale — the cost is spread more efficiently across larger groups. Most international medical facilities in Asia charge well under $10,000 USD per delivery, meaning many schools are overshooting their sum insured.

Vennsure View

Larger schools get better maternity rates. We negotiate this as part of the overall programme, not in isolation.

Benefit

Vision

Typical: USD $500+

Vision does not typically deliver a major bump in teacher satisfaction but adds robustness to the package. For larger-budget schools, the premium increase per head is modest and can help round out a comprehensive offer.

Vennsure View

Low satisfaction impact. For tight budgets, redirect this to outpatient or wellness.

Benefit

Wellness

Typical: USD $1,000+

Preventative care benefits have a good impact on teacher perception. Premium impact is subjective — some insurers view wellness as budget-neutral or even positive on claims ratios; others do not. Rate variation is significant and worth shopping.

Vennsure View

Vennsure recommends wellness to all schools. It encourages regular health checks, reducing missed teaching days and improving classroom performance.

~USD $1,000 – $2,000 Per Head

Benefit

Area of Cover

Typical: Asia (though WWE recommended)

Asia-only is slightly more popular with mid-range schools, but there is generally little value in the limitation. Insurers rarely price a meaningful discount for Asia-only vs WWE as the risk profile is similar. The psychological cost to teaching staff outweighs the premium saving.

Vennsure View

We always recommend WWE. The saving on Asia-only is rarely worth the trade-off.

Benefit

Deductibles & Copays

Typical: $50 / 25%

Low or no copays are one of the largest premium drivers. Many mid-range schools use annual deductibles ($200–$300 per year) instead of per-visit deductibles. Vennsure does not recommend annual deductibles — insurers frequently lose track of the amount paid, creating customer service issues.

Vennsure View

Per-visit deductibles are cleaner to administer and more predictable. Avoid annual deductibles.

Benefit

Inpatient Limit

Typical: USD $100k – $500k

There is meaningful risk in this range — complicated treatments or acute injuries can run to $500k. The $500k to $1m gap tends to create a steep rate increase. Schools with tighter budgets can cap here for solid savings, but should be aware of the coverage gap.

Vennsure View

Try to get to $500k minimum. The gap between $100k and $500k is where real tail risk sits.

Benefit

Outpatient

Typical: USD $1,000 – $5,000

The majority of school claims come from outpatient. A low cap means insurers reduce premiums significantly — but also means the benefit may run out mid-year, creating significant staff complaints. Getting this wrong generates the most friction with teaching staff.

Vennsure View

Don't undercook outpatient. Running out mid-year causes more damage to teacher morale than almost any other benefit failure.

Benefit

Dental

Typical: USD $0 – $500

At low coverage levels, dental becomes a near-certain total loss for the insurer. If dental cleanings in your market average $150 and coverage is $150, the insurer has no risk — and prices accordingly. Adding $150 dental coverage would cost roughly $140 per person in premium.

Vennsure View

For tighter budgets, skip dental entirely and redirect to inpatient or outpatient. The cost-benefit is poor at low coverage levels.

Benefit

Maternity

Typical: USD $0 – $5,000

Many mid-range schools forego maternity, particularly smaller schools where the premium impact is disproportionate — especially when the teacher demographic skews towards women of child-bearing age. Maternity is a high-impact benefit but a significant cost for smaller groups.

Vennsure View

Maternity is high-impact but can be costly for small schools. We model the demographic risk before advising.

Benefit

Vision

Typical: USD $0

Rarely offered by smaller or mid-range schools due to low satisfaction impact relative to cost. Budget is generally better allocated elsewhere.

Vennsure View

Low value at this budget level. Skip in favour of outpatient or wellness.

Benefit

Wellness

Typical: USD $0 – $500

Wellness is often the first benefit added after inpatient and outpatient. Some insurers allow schools to charge the cost of work permit medical checks to the insurer through this benefit — a practical way to extract additional value.

Vennsure View

Vennsure recommends this to all schools. Charge work permit wellness checks through this benefit to maximise value.
